Château Tour Baladoz

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

The quintessential Saint-Émilion wine from the limestone plateau

An ancient estate, high-quality terroir and winemaking expertise from the vine to the bottle ensure the fine reputation of wines produced at Château Tour Baladoz. These wines are characterised by their persistent freshness and minerality, expressing their terroir.

Following cold pre-fermentation maceration, the wine is kept on the skins for 15 to 30 days in concrete and stainless-steel vats of varying sizes for fine-tuned plot-by-plot fermentation. Each operation is carried out according to the vintage and grapes, and all vats are analysed independently.  The methods applied are determined by tasting the grapes and assessing the condition of the vineyards, then tasting the juice.

The wines are aged for 15 to 20 months in French oak barrels from 10 different cooperages, including 70% new barrels.

The predominance of Merlot accounts for the wines' dark colour and red fruit aromas featuring oaky and spicy overtones. The wine starts out powerful and full-bodied on the palate, with a beautiful tannic structure, going on to reveal a long, fresh aftertaste.

Aromas of black-cherries and blackberries with hints of vanilla bean. Remains subtle yet intense. Full body, very fine, polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Give it two or three years to come together. Best ever? Drink in 2020.

2015

Neil Martin, wineadvocate.com

91-93 (échantillon Primeurs)

The 2015 Château La Tour Baladoz has a refined and pure bouquet that blossoms in the glass, the oak beautifully integrated and the terroir coming through. The palate is sweet on the entry but does not become cloying. It is modern in style, but not overdone, and it has silky smooth tannins with a lush, precocious finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a well-crafted, hedonistic Saint Emilion made with style. Drink 2020 – 2040. (avril 2016)

The winery THE WINEMAKER SPEAKS

Minerality emblematic of the terroir

Our wines are produced on the finest limestone terroirs in the St Émilion appellation (30 to 50 metres of topsoil on the parent rock). It is, therefore, only natural that they express the minerality of their terroir.

All the vines on the plateau are planted on top of 2 or 3 levels of quarries extending up to 11 metres below ground. During our underground expeditions, it is not uncommon to discover clusters of vine roots which capture the air's humidity on rocks 8-10 metres below the earth's surface.

While 70% of the vines are planted on the plateau, the remaining 30% are grown on steep slopes in a small valley, reflecting the rich diversity of the terroir. This varies from pure limestone to marl limestone characteristic of the Champagne region to tufa to multicoloured clay soils (red clay, clay-limestone and even blue clay, characteristic of the Pétrus vineyard).

Château Roquettes

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

An immensely fruity wine!

The vines of Château Roquettes, formerly known as Roquettes Mondottes, are located between Château La Mondotte and Château Tour Baladoz, and were added to the latter in 1984. Merlot's intense fruitiness lends Château Roquettes its distinctive personality.

The wines are aged for 12 to 18 months in oak barrels.

The wine is garnet-red and features powerful red-fruit aromas (strawberries and cherries) with overtones of vanilla and roasted nuts. It is lively on the palate, dominated by fruity notes with slightly toasty overtones. The well-structured tannin indicates good ageing potential.

Easygoing wines made for sharing
